Benjamin Block is a Systems Engineering student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Systems Engineering Intern at Dumore Motors, where he supports process improvement and manufacturing optimization projects.
What project are you currently working on, and what has it taught you about continuous improvement?
“My current project focuses on standardizing wire tension systems on motor winding equipment. The goal is to reduce wire breakage, scrap, and operator downtime by improving consistency across machines. The project has shown me how small process improvements can have a meaningful impact on quality, efficiency, and cost. It’s also reinforced how engineering decisions are often driven by both technical performance and business value.”
How has seeing products move from engineering through manufacturing changed your perspective on problem solving?
“Seeing the full process from concept through manufacturing has shown me how connected everything is. A change in one area can impact multiple steps downstream, so it’s important to understand the entire process before trying to solve a problem. Working in this environment has reinforced the importance of looking at the bigger picture and making sure you’re solving the right problem, not just the most obvious one.”
What interested you most about joining Dumore Motors and Magneto Movement as a Systems Engineering Intern?
“One thing that attracted me to Dumore was the opportunity to work independently while contributing to real projects. Since joining the team, I’ve learned that engineering in a manufacturing environment requires a lot of initiative and adaptability. Unlike the classroom, where projects are highly structured, I’ve had to take ownership of my work, seek out information, and learn how to navigate challenges while working alongside experienced engineers.”
